America West Airlines
Low cost carrier America West Airlines is the second largest low cost carriers in the US, and one of the top ten largest major airlines in the US based on passenger volume. The airline has hubs in Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Las Vegas McCarran International Airport. In 2005, the airline merged with US Airways, with whom they had previously had a code sharing agreement, and in 2006, the America West Airline name was being absorbed into the US Airways network.

The America West Airline Story
America West Airlines began flying three flights a day in 1983 out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to Las Vegas and by the end of the following year, America West had 21 planes flying to a 23 different destination cities. The fast growth was financially difficult for the young airline to bear, however, and the airline fell out of profitability in 1986. America West tried to counteract the effect by continuing to grow to bring in more money, including adding a Trans Pacific route to Japan, a rarity for a low cost airline, but the company continued to lose money. In 1991, America West was forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

America West was brought out of bankruptcy four years later, when Mesa Airlines and Continental Airlines bought large stakes in the company. The airline continued to operate at a loss, however, until 2005, when US Airways bought America West. US Airways is not keeping the America West names, instead repainting America West’s fleet and changing America West airport advertising to reflect the US Airways and US Airways Express name.
