KLM Airlines has a stellar safety record overall, but the airline was involved in the worst disaster in the history of commercial aviation. On March 27, 1977, a KLM plane collided with a Pan Am plane on the runway at the airport in Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. Both planes were destroyed and 586 people were killed.
