LAN Airlines
LAN Airlines is the largest airline in Chile, and is quickly becoming one of the largest airlines in the world. Currently LAN is the second largest airline in South America. It flies to North and Central America, The Caribbean, Europe, and Asia, with help from its partners in the One World frequent flyer program alliance. Its main hub is at Arturo M. Benitez International Airport in Santiago, Chile, and its headquarters is in the same city.

The History Of LAN
LAN Airlines began flying in 1929, under the name Linea Aeropostal Santiago – Arica, and then changed names to LAN Chile in 1932. Throughout the years, the airline slowly grew, acquiring new routes and adding to its fleet whenever possible. It also started a network of subsidiary airline in fellow South American countries: LAN Peru Airlines, LAN Argentina Airlines, and LAN Express, and then eventually Central American airlines LAN Ecuador and LAN Express. LAN Chile Airlines continued to add subsidiaries throughout Central and South America, allowing it to expand its network of routes at every turn. In 1998, LAN began operating all of its individual airlines under the one LAN Airlines banner.

A dark day in the history of LAN Chile Airlines is an accident on August 4, 1987; the landing gear of one of their 737 aircrafts failed and the plane caught fire. One person was killed.

That accident aside, LAN Airlines consistently leads the industry in customer service satisfaction. The airline has won several awards from industry bodies and travel agency groups. In 2007, the airline will roll out its new business class service is said to be among the most luxurious in the aviation industry, with a new, advanced in flight entertainment system, flat beds, and screens separating passengers while they sleep.
