Olympic Airlines
Olympic Airlines is the flag carrier of Greece. It is ran by the state of Greece and employs approximately 1,850 people. Athens is the city for the company headquarters. When frequent flyers see the logo for Olympic Airlines, they often thing it resembles the logo of the Olympic Games. However, the airline was not named after the Olympics. Instead, the founders of Olympic Airlines chose to use the name Olympic Airlines to honor the Twelve Olympians of Greek mythology. The airline is quite old and was created in 1930. It was once called Icarus, but went bankrupt not long after its start. Several other airlines were created in Greece, however when all of them started having problems, the founders chose to merge the three, creating what is known today as Olympic Airlines. |

Olympic Airlines continues to face financial problems. Most of their financial problems has been linked to poor management. Some of the main problems included the fact that Greek politicians and their families all used the airline for free. In addition, members of the press only paid 3% of what normal customers paid. These small discounts lead to great financial loss.
According to the media, Olympic Airlines will be re-launched soon. The new airline will not be run by the government, but by private investors. The secret code name for this project has been “Pantheon Airways”. Throughout the years, Olympic Airlines had its fair share of tragedies and crashes. However, when compared to other airlines, there were not all that many in total. Since 1959, Olympic Airlines had only six crashes. The last crash was on August 3, 1989 when 31 passengers and 3 crew members were killed. The latest crash happened near Samos Airport in Greece. Greece would like to see a successful airline in their state again. After all, they want to bring tourists to their country and would love to have easy access to travel, like the rest of the world. However, unless things change quite a bit, the airline might not survive, even under the new re-launch plans. Only time will tell, but the new ideas of privatizing the airline will surely help a bit. |
