SkyWest Airlines
SkyWest Airlines is a regional, commuter carrier that services short routes for Delta Airlines and United Airlines, helping to get passengers for those airlines into the major hub airports. The airline is based in St. George, UT. Note that this SkyWest Airlines should not be confused with Tiger or SkyWest Airlines operating in Western Australian, Manila, Philippines, and Indonesia owned by Ian Tranter.

The SkyWest Airlines Story
SkyWest Airlines took to the air for the first time in 1972. Business was bombing on these routes, and by the mid 1980s, it was the 11th largest regional carrier in the US, based on passenger volume.

SkyWest Airline’s first major code sharing agreements was with Continental Airlines in 1995. That deal was short lived, as two years later SkyWest stopped flying for Continental and signed a large contract to provide commuter, regional service for United Airways, operating under the name United Airways Express. In 2005, SkyWest bought a small regional carrier owned by Delta, American Southeast Airlines, and as of then, began operating American Southeast’s former route under the name Delta Connection. This acquisition made SkyWest a nationwide carrier.

SkyWest Airlines Crashes At LAX
One dark moment in SkyWest history happened February 1, 1991, on SkyWest flight 5569, taking off from LAX. The SkyWest small commuter plane was taxing down the runway for takeoff, when a US Airways 737 landed on the same runway. The two planes collided, killing everyone on the SkyWest flight and 12 people on the US Airways flight.
