Song Airlines
Song Airlines, a low cost carrier owned by major airline Delta, was started as a challenge to JetBlue’s low cost services out of New York’s JFK airport. Customers seemed to take to Delta/Song Airline’s cheap ticket prices, but ultimately, because of Delta’s own financial trouble, Song Airlines was folded and absorbed into the main Delta brand. The Song Airlines Story Song Airlines was launched in 2003 by Delta Airlines as a response to JetBlue Airline’s low cost services on many Delta routes. Song Airline’s focus was flying on heavily traveled tourist routes, like New York to Florida, and Florida and New York to the West Coast, much like low cost British airlines who have thrived in Europe. In a move that has since been criticized by ad executives, Song attempted to create a stylish airline that would appeal to primarily professional women, with feminine colors, stylish uniforms, and healthy, organic snacks. The airline also offered satellite TV, in seat trivia games that could be played against other flyers, and cocktails for purchase. |

Customers flocked to Delta/Song Airway’s bargain basement flights, especially on the New York to Orlando, Florida, route, but this success was not enough to keep the airline afloat. Song’s parent company, Delta, was forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in late 2005, and in 2006, Delta decided it could no longer afford to operate Song Airlines as an independent brand. Song flew its last flight on April 30, 2006, and starting May 1, 2006, all Song Airline flights were absorbed into the regular Delta schedule.
Although Delta Airlines does not offer Song flights as a separate entity anymore, customers can still by reduced “Song Fares” on regularly scheduled Delta flights on Song’s old routes. Web Address For Song Airline Changes When Delta Song Airlines became just Delta, Song Airline’s online web services were integrated into Delta’s own website. The FlySong website still exists, but is simply refers customers to Delta’s site for all Song Airlines travel information, like fares, schedules, and reservations. Currently, customers can only get Song airfares on Delta flights that are on the same routes Song used to fly; for instance, you can get a Song fare from New York to Orlando, but not a Delta Song Airlines fare to Moscow. Delta is planning to expand Song Airline fares onto some other routes throughout 2007, though these will be domestic US routes. |
