Sun Country Airlines, based in Minneapolis – St. Paul, Minnesota, is a low cost airline carrier. Their only hub is in Minneapolis; all flights originate there, and nearly all flights go to points south, in the “sun country”, to place like Florida, Mexico, Texas, Puerto Rico, and Colorado. The airline also offers flights to New York, Washington D.C., Seattle, and several destinations in California. Some Sun Country Airline routes only operate seasonally, like their flights to Mexico and Puerto Rico, and some operate year round.

The Sun Country Airlines Story
Sun Country Airline was born when another Minnesota based airline, Braniff International Airways shut down in 1982. Some of the Braniff employees got together with Minneapolis based MLT vacations to form Sun Country Airlines. The original idea was to operate the airline with one plane to fly charter only flights to MLT destinations.

Sun Country went from strength to strength through the 1980s and into the early 1990s by flying charter flights from the Midwest to Las Vegas and points in Mexico and the Caribbean. The airline also leased their planes out to anyone who wanted to use them, from the military to private companies. In the mid 1990s, however, major airlines began to offer customers cheaper, more flexible fares and new routes, and Sun Country took a financial hit. The 9/11 terror attacks caused yet another drop in air travel, and it was the final blow to Sun Country. The airline declared bankruptcy in December, 2001.

To recover financially, Sun Country Airlines sold almost all of their planes, but they maintained their operating certificate. With a new CEO, Rob Daly, at the helm, the company was able to rebuild itself into a low cost airline flying to coastal destinations and Las Vegas. The company emerged from bankruptcy in 2004 and has since added more destinations and re-added charter flights to their business model as well.
