The History Of US Airways
US Airways got its start under the name All American Aviation Company in Pittsburg, PA, in 1939. The company was started by the Du Pont family to service regional destinations all over the Ohio River Valley. In 1952, the company changed names to Allegheny Airlines and expanding its service to include some destinations in the Northeastern US. In 1979, Allegheny Airlines changed its name to US Airways, and after buying ups some smaller airlines, began expanding to national and then international service. Also during this period, US Airways expanded its fleet to allow longer, transatlantic flights. The Effect Of 9/11 On US Airways Airline Prior to the 9/11 terror attacks, US Airways was the main airline operating out of Washington, DC’s Reagan International Airport. That airport was closed for more than a year after the attacks, which had a dire effect on the airline’s business. US Airways was forced to close some of its regional airlines, like Metrojet, and the fallout forced the airline to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August, 2002. The government stepped in with a loan to the airline, and it was able to emerge from bankruptcy in 2003, ahead of many of the other airlines who filed for bankruptcy in the wake of 9/11. The financial boom was short lived, however, and US Airways again had to file for bankruptcy in late 2004.
